The Junker Ju87 'Stuka' became one of the most infamous aircrafts of World War II. It gained its' fame during the opening actions of the Second World War, as well as in the Spanish Civil War. During the opening phases of World War II, the 'Stuka' achieved notoriety through its great accuracy, as well as the psychological effect of the 'trumpet' device on the undercarriage legs, this device made a wailing noise as the aircraft dived. However, by the time of the Battle of Britain, the 'Stuka' was hopelessly outclassed when faced with effective fighter sition. The Hurricanes and Spitfires of the RAF were able to decimate the hess and vulnerable 'Stukas' to such an extent, they were withdrawn from the Battle. In the opening movements of the campaign on the Eastern Front and again in the Western Desert, the 'Stuka' proved that in a clear sky it was a devastatingly effective weapon, but when faced with fighter sition it was a death trap for the crews. From the Manufacturer --------------------- The Stuka was the most famous of all planes used by the Germans as a sturzkamfflugzeug (dive bomber). It is instantly recognisable with its inverted gull-wings, and fixed-undercarriage. The Ju 87 was ugly, sturdy, accurate, but very vulnerable to enemy fighters. Its accuracy was high when in a full dive that was up to 80 degrees. Once the bomb was released it used an automatic pull-up system to ensure that the plane pulled out of the dive even if the pilot blacked out from the high G forces.
